jeje :P well, i dont fully agree with you. there are many good, educational programs on tv. people just have to develop their critical viewing and thinking abilities in order to find them. furthermore tele-courses are offered at some universities that implement television programming with web-based teaching. so, it is happening!
It is happening indeed...but don't forger that it is happening for people that can access these courses or whatever...Poor families have access only to the major channels that for me broadcast constant bullshits :P And they know what they are doing! They want the people manipulated of course and they do succeed! You think that people are not influenced by TV? even me and you I think we have raised with it... Beyond all just take a look at the box-office and check out the BILLIONS spent and MILLIONS watched movies like sex and the city,and run to buy the new shoes that the movie is promoting... Yes there are ways out and there can be a good TV I totally agree to that...But if you don't seek for the truth you will never learn that they lie, and you will never find the way to take advantage of this invention... And to do so, a first step is to follow alternative media... P.S. Which university does this? In my country zero unfortunatelly :(
So, I can see your point here. It is true. TV manipulates. But also entertains. And these poor families you ve cited maybe find TV as their best way of entertainment. It is cheap and enables you to be entertained in your home by people you wouldn't afford to have in your home. Besides education, entertainment is a significant factor we shouldn’t forget. And I disagree with you again, there are plenty of quantity programs even in major tv channels.
Furthermore, about the sex and the city movie you ve mentioned, I would say that television is a very democratic tool, it is available to everybody and entirely governed by what the people want. The most terrifying thing is what people do want. They WANT movies such as sex and the city.
So my message would be try to criticize and think about which programs are best for you in order to educate yourself, entertain it and stop manipulation. We can change the contents of tv if we start thinking like that. I don’t believe in absolute and categorical methods. We shouldn’t kill our tv, we should just find a better way of using it. I am a fan of alternative media too.
